Special Characters in names
Allow for special characters in names. Example: Téa. Váquéz, Garciá, Zöe, Eleña, etc.

Our district ran into student data not syncing properly from our SIS to certain Ed tech applications when using apostrophes in first names. Which is a shame considering at the very least 35ish% of our students have them in their name. I empathize; I just found out this year I should really have an accent on the end of my name, however, WI doesn't allow on legal documents. <Sad face.>

Students have the right to have their names spelled correctly.

Special Characters in names needs to happen. It is part of an identifier, and being able to properly write a student's name shows respect.

Thank you for your reply, Jeffery Post. I am checking with my district IT department to see if this is possible in Infinite Campus.

The tricky part is that some Schools support this character and others do not. so dpi would need to come up with an approach to allow for schools to send them while maintaining the ability for schools that do not have accent character support to find and not duplicate existing WISEid number using only none accented characters.
One idea would be for WISEid to store two versions of names, one with the accented characters and one without. (The Other Names field could probably do this).

Thank you Karen for suggesting this! It's crucial to maintain the identities of students by correctly recording their names.

Due to differences and limitations in software used by agencies, the same person may be entered differently in multiple organizations. So that these differences do not cause duplicate WISEid's. Perhaps additional aliases should be created with common substitutions for characters outside of A-Z and a-z.
